What does Black Bean Dip and Procrastination have in common?

healthy recipes motivation procrastination Aug 15, 2022

I am sitting at my desk today, feeling a little off.

Have you ever had one of those days?

You have a thousand things to do, but your mind feels hijacked, your heart is not into it, or you think you lack the motivation.

What do you do those days?

Even though I want to watch youtube, hoping to get inspired, or slip back into bed because I feel tired, here is what I will do today: black bean dip.

Yup. Black bean dip.

Surprised?

Let me explain.

I have wanted to make it for some time, but I never have before. Like many things I have never done before, it seems like a superhuman strength I don't have. So I don't do it.

Black bean dip? Yes! Black bean dip. Bear with me.

Black bean dip is as good an example as any other, and it's what I am about to make ... so ...

Today is the day.

Because I know, even though it seems to be quite disconnected from what I ought to be doing, it's not a trigger. It's not a "have to" do item. Instead, it's something fun and experimental that I have wanted to try.

It won't make me feel like I am pushing myself to do something I don't want to do. It won't add to the weight I feel right now.

Quite the opposite. I speak from experience - not the black bean dip, but what it represents.

Because I know that while I make that bean dip, I will be moving. Movement is so important to flow, and movement or taking action helps us gain momentum.

It's what will help me get back on track with other tasks.

It's like a Trojan horse - a ruse to get past the guards in my mind.

Some days I get my sneakers on and go for a walk. Walking also creates movement and is a great way to access your innate creativity.

Bean dip is my creative muse today.

What about you? What do you have to do but don't feel like doing right now?

What would you like to do if you could do anything you want right now and didn't feel limited in any way?

Do that.

Give yourself permission to trust that doing more of what activates creativity and gets you moving is exactly what you need most right now.

It's all about letting go of the "should" and "have to" and self-imposed limitations and choosing to nurture yourself creatively to get back on track.

Because sitting on the couch is not nurturing. I know you tell yourself it is. But if you are not moving, it's not likely to help you progress in the direction you want.

I know there is so much more to it. Procrastination points to fear and trapped emotions, and it's important to be with those too. But if you aren't in that headspace right now, all you have to do is move. Do something, anything, to get you moving beyond the "off" energy you are feeling right now.

I'd love to hear what you do to create momentum on those days you just don't feel like it.

How are you doing? How are you truly doing right now?

Take a moment to reflect. It matters because YOU matter.

Ps. I posted a picture of the dip, so that you know I did do it! ; )

Here is the recipe so you can make it too:

Black Bean Dip

Ingredients:

  • 3 cloves of garlic
  • 2 chopped jalapenos, seeds removed
  • 1/4 Cup cilantro.   I used mint, an acceptable substitute for cilantro in most recipes.
  • 2 (15.5 oz) cans of black beans, drained
  • 1/2 lime, juiced
  • 1-1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp oregano
  • 1/4 tsp black pepper
  • 1 Tbsp balsamic vinegar
  • 2 Tbsp water, if needed

Process first 3 ingredients first. Then add the rest and process until smooth. Reserve some of the beans if you prefer chunky.

Enjoy!

The dip turned out amazing, with incredible flavours, and I felt so much happier after completing this task. I feel so much better than an hour of procrastinating would have felt.
